16 countries, one favorite – Vogel's 6th Levi lift

As the Levi Six chairlift rose into the fell in the summer of 2024, experienced lift builder Johann Vogel returned to familiar surroundings to pass on decades of expertise to the next generation.

In the summer of 2024, a familiar figure from Austria was once again present at the Levi Six chairlift construction site. Johann Vogel, who began his career at Doppelmayr in 1986, has never lost his passion for building lifts. Although he has been retired for 1.5 years, he is still present on-site, observing the installation of the Levi Six upper station’s interior. His young Austrian apprentice tightens the bolts while Johann praises his successor. He is now passing on his extensive knowledge and expertise to the next generation.

Doppelmayr Group is an Austrian company and the world’s leading manufacturer of ropeway technology. The company specializes in designing, manufacturing, and installing ski lifts, gondolas, and other cable transport systems, operating in over 50 countries. One of their most trusted builders is Johann Vogel, an experienced lift expert who has played a key role in numerous major projects worldwide.

Levi calls him back year after year

Johann has built lifts in 16 different countries, but Levi always draws him back. He values the area's stunning nature, peaceful atmosphere, and the stress-free lifestyle of the locals.

"Life here is very different. Hunting and fishing are important to the people, and the sauna is an essential part of life. Your way of living is better," Johann says.

He has been involved in the construction of six lifts in Levi, the most recent being Levi Six, which was officially opened on December 6, 2024. Lift projects take months to complete, and in total, Johann has spent two years in Levi working on these projects.

"When I first came to Levi in 1999 to build the Gondoli 2000 lift, I immediately liked the place and the people. Finns have a strong work ethic, and this year, I have had the privilege of working with the same people on the Levi Six project as I did back in 1999," Johann says with a smile.

Johann emphasizes that lift construction is not just a technical task but comes with great responsibility. He compares his work to that of an aircraft mechanic, where safety is the top priority.

"This is a job like any other, but with greater responsibility—just like aircraft mechanics have. Lifts transport hundreds of thousands of people each year, and they want to feel safe. Lift safety begins with what we do—building the lifts. Later, the responsibility shifts to the lift operators once the lift is in use," Johann explains.
